2019 RAM 1500 vs Silverado: Powertrain & Towing

Although more and more Des Moines truck owners are using their pickups for daily driving, there's no doubt that engine options and towing capability are two of the most important considerations when shopping for a new pickup truck. So we're going to start by taking a look at some of the engine options available on RAM 1500 and Chevy Silverado, to see which offers better performance and efficiency.

The 2019 RAM 1500 comes standard with a 3.6l V6 that puts out 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the 2019 Chevy Silverado ships with a larger 4.3l V6 at 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. Omaha shoppers will notice that, despite its larger engine, the Chevy offers less horsepower than the more efficient V6 in the all-new RAM. RAM has also given the V6 a new mild hybrid eTorque system, which saves on gas and provides more low-range torque.

Many of our Iowa customers wouldn't even consider buying a pickup truck without a V8, and both the 2019 RAM 1500 and 2019 Chevy Silverado offer larger V8 engine options to handle the demands put on them. RAM offers a 5.7l V8 with its eTorque mild hybrid technology, while the Silverado offers a 6.2l V8. Despite using a smaller, more efficient engine, the 2019 RAM 1500 offers a max towing capacity of 12,750 lbs, beating the Silverado by 550 lbs.

Towing on the RAM is also made easier by its innovative suspensions. Standard on the 2019 RAM 1500 is its patented coil spring suspension, which allows for greater towing without sacrificing comfort. However, its upgraded air suspension automatically adjusts based on load and driving conditions, providing stability, comfort, and maximum towing power. So although Chevy has increased its towing capacity, it can't tow as much as the 2019 RAM 1500 or do so as comfortably.

Interior & Features

In designing the interior of the 2019 RAM 1500, RAM focused on using rugged materials that could also feel at home in a luxury vehicle. At top trim levels, the leather interior and wealth of features are downright luxurious, and have led to the 2019 RAM 1500 being called the most luxurious pickup truck ever made. Combining its interior quality and best-in-class V8 towing, it's shouldn't surprise Omaha shoppers that the 2019 RAM 1500 was named Motor Trend's truck of the year.

The 2019 Chevy Silverado's interior is also much-improved from its previous generation, particularly when it comes to its tech interface. However, it still uses many of the plastic components from last year's model, and its overall design is not as innovative or well-built as the RAM's. Both the RAM 1500 and Chevy Silverado offer options like premium leather seats and upgraded sound systems, but when comparing the top trim levels, the 2019 RAM 1500 uses higher quality materials, and its 12-inch touchscreen is the largest in its class. That said, the base work truck trim of the 2019 Silverado does offer more tech features than the base RAM. But most consumers will find the 2019 RAM 1500 to provide better features and value across the range.
